what is asset based community development? (abcd)

“start with what’s strong, not what’s wrong”

ABCD starts with ‘’what’s strong, not what’s wrong’’ in our communities.

It’s about recognising that every one of us, regardless of age or background or personal circumstances have skills, knowledge and energy that we can use to create the healthy local community that we wish to live in.

ABCD is about recognising and enabling those gifts to be used to benefit the community.

All communities have assets; this includes the individuals that makeup communities, clubs and societies, youth groups, music and arts facilities, local businesses, faith groups, charities, schools, third sector organisations, and local council services.

ABCD is about recognising the value of these assets, connecting them, supporting them and helping them to make a full contribution to sustain strong and resilient communities.

We might, for example, invest in training so an individual can use their skills to boost the community, or invest in facilities to enable groups to meet and communicate.
